Executive Director's July 2023 Message

Executive Director Message

Lately, my yard looks like a reality TV show makeover. It took a small army a full day to rid my yard of stubborn weeds. I asked my husband to help me get the yard ready for summer. The propane tank is full and the grill is ready for our July 4th celebration. I consulted the experts at Sloat Garden Center on how to design and plant an herb garden for beauty and bounty. Because we get to work in San Francisco, I’m adding some marinated galbi from HMart to my menu this year. Nothing feels more like summer than the crackling sounds of sizzling meat and grilled veggies seasoned with fresh herbs from my garden wafting through the air while holding a fresh glass of homemade lemonade in one hand and a good book in the other. My yard is my “happy place.” I love tending to my garden and lounging outside when the sun is out, which is why July is UV Awareness Month.

Sun exposure can lead to melanoma, one of the most common cancers affecting adolescents and young adults. You can protect your exposed skin by applying sunscreen, which can be purchased using your Healthcare FSA account. For our members who have perfect vision, you can now use your vision benefit for non-prescription sunglasses. A stylish pair of sunglasses not only protect your eyes but also boost confidence as you head out the door. With the shortage of doctors these days, July is a great time to schedule your annual mole check with your doctor for the Fall to ensure your skin stays healthy and address any concerns before it becomes a problem.

Securing a doctor's appointment is like planning a summer vacation. You must book ahead if you want to get the best times. Every year, I encourage my staff to plan their vacations and take time off to recharge. Sometimes, when we disconnect from it all, we’re able to gain a greater perspective. I always come back from my vacations ready to tackle a new issue or solve an old problem.

It’s going to be a beautiful summer, so enjoy your time outside. Or you can always head to Sloat Garden Center and make your yard your “happy place.”

Be well,

Abbie Yant, RN MA
