Executive Director's June Message

Rey Guillen, Executive Director

June has become a month full of celebrations for me: the official start of summer, Father’s Day, and PRIDE!

I am the proud father of three adult children. Whenever I witness one of them interact with the world around them, it evokes a mix of emotions in me—pride is always first and foremost. I am proud of what they have achieved, but I’m even more proud that each one of them is a kind human being.

One of my sons is gay. This means I get the wonderful privilege to celebrate Pride Month as a parent of a gay son. I get to celebrate him, promote understanding, and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. And there is no better place than San Francisco to celebrate Pride month. This year, SFHSS will have its own contingent marching in the parade. If you attend the parade this year, shout “hi” as we march by or, if you are watching from home, just shout at us through your television. We’ll be multitasking that day: supporting the LGBTQ+ community and walking for our health.

June is also Men’s Health Month. This year’s theme focuses on closing the Empathy Gap in men’s health through advocacy, awareness, and action. The Empathy Gap refers to the lack of care, funding, and support for men’s issues, including health education and emotional well-being. Men’s challenges are often overlooked, leading to fewer resources, delayed care, and limited awareness.

While awareness and funding efforts have successfully addressed numerous health challenges over the years, men’s health issues receive significantly less attention, despite statistics demonstrating clear concern:

I encourage all fathers, brothers, and sons to prioritize their health and well-being by learning more about preventative health practices and steps they can take to live longer, healthier lives.

Take care,

Rey Guillen
