February 2026 Executive Director's Message

Rey Guillen, Executive Director

Can you believe that it’s February already? That means Valentine’s Day is fast approaching.  While you’re expressing affection for your sweetheart, don’t forget to love yourself too. February is Heart Health Month, a reminder to care for your heart through simple everyday habits that support your long-term health.

Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans every year, which is why the San Francisco Health Service System’s Strategic Goals for 2026 include a targeted focus on three health and well-being pillars, including prevention, mental health, and heart health. Even small changes to your lifestyle and habits can vastly improve your heart health. Try these heart-healthy tips:

  • Move more by doing what you enjoy, like walking, stretching, or yoga
  • Manage stress with short breaks, mindfulness, or deep breathing
  • Prioritize sleep to support heart health and energy
  • Eat balanced meals with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins
  • Stay on top of preventive care, including regular checkups

You can also join us at any of the 30+ programs and events this month to start or level up your heart health journey.

Even your SFHSS Dental and Vision benefits can support your path to a healthier heart. Research shows that gum disease can triple the risk of a heart attack. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, more than 90% of systemic diseases, including heart disease, can have oral signs. Brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits help protect both your smile and your heart. Your eyes can also reveal clues about your heart health. A yearly eye exam can help detect signs of more than 270 health conditions and diseases, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, both of which can increase the risk of heart disease. As a VSP member, routine eye exams are available for a $10 co-payment. Log in to your VSP member account or visit vsp.com to find a VSP network doctor near you.

I also want to note that the upcoming February 12, 2026 Health Service Board (HSB) meeting is our members’ second and final opportunity to provide public input on the SFHSS budget proposals for the next two fiscal years. We always appreciate members taking an active role in their health benefits and attending our HSB meetings.

In good health,

Rey Guillen
